Univ. of Nebraska ASA welcomes Dr. Peter D’Antonio of RPG

The University of Nebraska Acoustical Society of America student chapter is having a busy semester.  On Tuesday, March 13, 2012, the group hosted Dr. Peter D’Antonio of RPG.  Dr. D’Antonio spoke to the group about the current state-of-the-art with regards to measurements of absorption, scattering, and diffusion coefficients.  He also introduced the many product lines that RPG offers.  Innovation and entrepreneurship are concepts that are being more heavily focused on in engineering education, so I asked Peter how he brings so many innovative products to the market.  Here are some helpful hints he shared:

  1. He thinks about what products are needed in the market but aren’t there yet, listening to architects and acoustical consultants describe their needs.
  2. He stays abreast of developments and ideas from other fields (like mathematics or seismology) that may translate to the architectural acoustics field, e.g. by reading a lot, scanning daily science blogs/websites, traveling the world to trade shows, etc.
  3. He thinks of these things in his sleep (so get some rest everyone!)

Thank you so much, Peter, for sharing information with us!  This was Peter’s 2nd visit to Nebraska in the past few years, and we look forward to welcoming him back again soon.
