NAG Meetings 1-20-16 and 2-10-16

For 2016, we have decided to hold NAG meetings monthly through the academic year, rather than every two to three weeks.  At the January meeting, Brenna Boyd discussed the current state-of-the-art related to acoustics in Building Information Modeling (BIM).  BIM is being used more and more widely in the design and construction of buildings, and we discussed how acoustics could be more successfully integrated into the BIM process.  The ‘acoustic nugget’ discussed photoacoustic imaging, specifically the scholarly work of Dr. Lihong Wang as featured on NPR.  At February’s NAG meeting, Jay Bliefnick presented on the results of a number of measurement trials he made with new room acoustic measurement equipment in the NAG lab.  The nugget featured Manchester’s Beetham Tower which produces eerie howls particularly windy days.  See it captured on social media!

NAG Winter Party 2015

Happy Holidays from NAG!

Happy Holidays from NAG!

The annual Nebraska Acoustics Group Winter Party was held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015.  The party featured italian food from Spezia in Omaha, a game of ‘LCR’ (to determine the order of opening gifts), and our traditional ‘white elephant’ gift exchange.  The ear stress toys were a hit this year, as shown in our annual group photo.  We wish all of our friends and colleagues a happy holiday season and all the best in 2016!

NAG members enjoy dinner at Bravo! Cucina Italiana with Ryan Skoug (7th from left, counting children!)

Ryan Skoug (MAE ’09) came back to Nebraska on December 4, 2015, to present on a number of different projects that he’s been working on as a consultant with ESI Engineering in Minneapolis, MN.  The talk was sponsored by the University of Nebraska ASA Student Chapter and held in conjunction with Dr. Wang’s AE 3300 ‘Building Acoustic Fundamentals’ class.  All in attendance found it to be a very well-presented and inspiring talk.  Thank you so much, Ryan!

Healthy Schools Project featured in UNL 2014-15 Research Report

Among the projects featured in the UNL 2014-15 Research Report is the one led by Dr. Lily Wang on assessing school environment and student performance, sponsored by the EPA Healthy Schools Initiative; a short video has been produced to describe the work.  The 2014-15 Report of the UNL Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools also discusses the project.  The research team has already measured the environmental conditions in over 100 classrooms in Nebraska.  Learn more and stay abreast of our project’s outcomes at http://engineering.unl.edu/healthyschools/!

NAG Meetings 11-11-15 and 12-2-15

At the 11-11-15 NAG meeting, Ian Hough presented on the noise measurement campaign and residence improvement program near Chicago airports, with which he was involved prior to joining us at UNL.  The ‘acoustic nugget’ focused on new technology that could maneuver objects with acoustic waves.  At our final NAG meeting for 2015 on 12-2-15, a series of videos demonstrating various acoustic concepts that PCB has put together with Dr. Andrew Barnard (Michigan Tech) was shared as the ‘acoustic nugget’, while Sungbeen Cho presented a project that he worked on in his former consulting position which just recently opened, Nuri Hall at the Daejeon Artist House in S. Korea.  We can’t believe there are only a few weeks remaining to the year… last post of the year will be about our upcoming NAG Holiday Party, Dec. 16, 2015!

Boyd’s study on crowd noise at hockey games

Brenna Boyd’s study on “Measurements and player surveys of crowd noise levels during college hockey games”, presented at the Acoustical Society of America meeting in Jacksonville, Florida (November 2015), generated a lot of buzz.  A press release prepared by the AIP was picked up by a number of online science and sports news channels, including Sport Daily Times.  Even Hoda and Kathie Lee Gifford discussed it on Tuesday’s NBC Today show (11/3/15) – they disagreed with the study’s results that higher crowd noise levels do not correlate with more goals or higher scores … but we are sticking by our findings!
