NAG Meeting 11-20-12

This was our last ‘official’ NAG meeting for 2012.  Matt Blevins presented on the work he’s been doing to outline an experimental study aimed at determining the bias and reproducibility of sound power measurement methods in the HVACR industry.  The acoustic nugget was an article published earlier this year, on the ‘quietest place on earth’ which appears to be in Minnesota (!) [Check out this video about it from the Today show!] And we were sad to learn that our favorite concert hall, the Holland Performing Arts Center in Omaha, had been damaged by a drunk driver recently… performances still sound outstanding there, though.

We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving holiday!

NAG Meeting 10-30-12

At this NAG meeting, Andrew Hathaway presented some preliminary results on how variations in the noise level at different time intervals were found to affect human performance and perception.  (Andrew left the next day to participate in a multi-city tour with the band Small Houses, performing 14 shows in 15 days! Have fun, Andrew!)  The acoustic nugget of the week was recent footage related to Felix Baumgarter’s free fall from outer space, and the resulting ‘human sonic boom’.  (We all want to work for Red Bull now too!)

Kansas City ASA Conference

NAG members had a great time at the Kansas City ASA conference!  At least 13 of us attended.  Highlights of the conference for those that attended included the following:

* Short Course on Auralization and Virtual Reality, presented by Prof. Michael Vorlander (RWTH Aachen University) and Dr. David T. Bradley (Vassar College)

* Tutorial Lecture on the Acoustics of Pianos, presented by Prof. Antoine Chaigne (ENSTA)

* Tour of the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

* Presentations in the session “Coordination of Architectural and Sound System Design in the Built Environment”

* The Knudsen Lecture, presented by Scott Pfeiffer (Threshold Acoustics)

* And of course, NAG game night!

Hope to see many of our ASA colleagues/friends at the next meeting (joint with ICA) in Montreal!

Science Daily posts on NAG work

We are excited that Science Daily posted about our project on how noise bursts can impact human performance and perception.  Christopher Ainley will be presenting the results at the upcoming ASA Meeting in Kansas City.  See you there!

Prof.-Dr. Michael Vorlander visits Univ. of Nebraska

We were very honored to host Prof.-Dr. Michael Vorlander from RWTH Aachen University in Germany for his first visit to Nebraska on October 17-18, 2012!  Prof. Vorlander presented a seminar, reviewing current research at the Institute of Acoustics at RWTH Aachen University, of which he is the Director.  He and his spouse also had the chance to eat some of Omaha’s finest cuisine with the Nebraska Acoustics Group, and visit the Omaha zoo (which is outstanding, by the way).  It was a great visit!

Dinner at Taste with Prof.-Dr. Michael Vorlander

NAG Meeting 10-09-12

At this NAG meeting, we busily made plans for the upcoming Acoustical Society of America conference in Kansas City.  At least 12 of us are planning to attend!  As usual, we will host a NAG Game Night on Tuesday evening immediately after the Technical Committee on Architectural Acoustics (TCAA) meeting… join us if you can!

New PhD student Joonhee Lee was the featured presenter at this NAG meeting.  He discussed measurements he’d made of a coupled volume scale model for his MS degree at RPI.  The acoustic nugget of the week was a link to these QSound Labs audio demos … if you haven’t heard the virtual barber, you have got to try it over headphones (perfect for the Halloween season)!

We look forward to seeing many of our friends in Kansas City!

Effects of Room Size and Reverberation, Receiver Location, and Source Rotation on Acoustical Metrics Related to Source Localization

A new article has just been published in Acta Acustica united with Acustica, authored by our alum Dr. Lauren Ronsse and Dr. Lily Wang: “Effects of Room Size and Reverberation, Receiver Location, and Source Rotation on Acoustical Metrics Related to Source Localization”.  The study looked at how room size and related reverberation impact metrics proposed for source localization, including interaural level differences (ILD) and distortion of frequency smoothed magnitude (DFSM).  At the distances measured, room reverberation did not appear to impact these metrics as much as other factors, such as source orientation or location of nearby reflective surfaces.

Adam Steinbach receives 2012 INCE Undergraduate Research Award!

Congratulations to Adam Steinbach, a junior in the UNL Architectural Engineering program!  He has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Undergraduate Research Award by the Institute of Noise Control Engineering!  He plans to use the funds to pay test subjects in a pilot subjective study on how best to determine the threshold of annoyance that humans have to noise with tonal components.

NAG Meeting 09-25-11

At today’s NAG meeting, some of us enjoyed red bean mooncakes (a traditional Chinese dessert during the annual Harvest Moon Festival), and all of us learned from Carl Hart’s presentation on ‘Finite Element Methods in Acoustics’.  It was interesting to hear about current developments on reducing the number of elements required to run this type of analysis.  Also, there were a number of fun weblinks shared as acoustic nuggets:

Only four weeks until the Kansas City Acoustical Society of America trip!  Over 12 NAG members plan to attend.  We’re really looking forward to the Short Course on Auralization and Virtual Reality, presented by Prof. Michael Vorlander and our alum Dr. David Bradley; the Tutorial Lecture on the Acoustics of Pianos, presented by Prof. Antoine Chaigne; and the tour of the new Kaufmann Center for the Performing Arts.

Prof. Vorlander will be visiting Omaha, during the week prior to the conference.  We are excited and honored to host him for his first trip to Nebraska!

UNASA Local Acoustical Consultant Panel Discussion (09-22-12)

The University of Nebraska ASA Group sponsored a luncheon today, featuring a panel of local acoustical consultants (all alums of our program!):  Jessica Hiatt from Alvine/IP Design Group, Eric Powell from Paradise Theater, and Jennifer Samson from WJHW.  The panelists discussed their day to day workloads, their most impressive/surprising projects, and other questions brought up by the attendees.  They highlighted that other important skills that they’ve found useful as an acoustical consultant (besides acoustics knowledge) include interpersonal skills (almost related to sales), writing/communication skills, and knowledge of HVAC systems.  It was great to hear about the professional experiences of these three young acousticians!
