Congratulations to Andrew Hathaway, who successfully defended his M.S. Thesis “Effects of Time Varying Background Noise Conditions on Human Perception and Performance” today (July 31, 2013), advised by Dr. Lily Wang!  NAG members went to Pitch for lunch followed by ice cream at eCreamery to celebrate.  Special thanks to all of the NAG alums and out-of-staters who participated in Andrew’s defense from afar through Google Hangouts!!  We’re considering opening up all future NAG thesis defenses in this way to any interested persons…

Congratulations to Caleb Sieck, who successfully defended his M.S. Thesis “Investigation of Sound Transmission through an Open Window into a Room” on July 26, 2013, advised by Dr. Siu-Kit Lau!  Caleb is continuing his education in acoustics as a PhD student in Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas – Austin.

Peng receives 2013 Martin Hirschorn IAC Prize

Congratulations to Zhao ‘Ellen’ Peng, who has received the 2013 Martin Hirschorn IAC Prize for a Graduate Student Project, from the Institute of Noise Control Engineering!  Ellen is currently a PhD student in our program, studying the impact of room acoustics on speech comprehension by English-as-Second-Language listeners versus native English speaking listeners.

Dr. Lily Wang presented a seminar “The Impact of Building Acoustics on Student Learning” at the Penn State Graduate Program in Acoustics on July 11, 2013.  It was her first time returning to State College, since graduating with her PhD there in 1999!  She enjoyed spending time with many of the acoustics faculty (including NAG alum, Dr. Michelle Vigeant) and other researchers at the Applied Research Lab.  Here is a (blurry) photo of Lily with her PhD advisor, Dr. Courtney Burroughs, who still resides in State College!

Dr. Lily Wang promoted to new position

Congratulations to Dr. Lily Wang, who has recently been promoted to the rank of full professor at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln!  She has also been named the new Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Faculty Development, in the UNL College of Engineering.  In the near future, she plans to spend Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in her office at the Omaha campus where the Architectural Engineering Program resides, while her Tuesdays and Thursdays will be spent at her new office in the Dean’s Suite, Othmer Hall in Lincoln.

The Annual ASHRAE Conference was held in Denver, Colorado, from June 22-26, 2013.  Dr. Lily Wang and Joonhee Lee both attended, participating primarily in the activities of Technical Committee 2.6 on Sound and Vibration Control.  Lily also had a chance to visit NAG alum David Manley (who recently received his P.E.!) and other friends at D.L. Adams Associates; they recently moved to a new office location in Denver.

The International Symposium on Room Acoustics (ISRA) was held in Toronto, after ICA.  This conference is always a valuable one, for anyone working in room acoustics.  Many of the world’s top room acousticians (both researchers and designers) gathered together to share experiences for the 3 day event.  Dr. Lily Wang and Matthew Blevins both presented talks at the symposium, and received excellent feedback and suggestions for future work.  Many thanks to Dr. John Bradley and John O’Keefe for their efforts in organizing this conference!  NAG alum, Dr. Michelle Vigeant, was awarded a special ‘Best Advisory Board Member’ award at the banquet, as well!

Nebraska Acoustics Group members had a wonderful time at the International Congress on Acoustics in Montreal, June 2013 (joint with the Acoustical Society of America meeting).  Check out our Picasa webpage for several photos from the event.  Highlights included: celebrating Dr. Leo Beranek receiving the 75-year ASA Member Certificate; NAG Game Night featuring a new game (the 5-Second Rule), Mafia, Canadian beer, and beer brewed and brought by Penn Stater Andrew Christian; Andrew Hathaway, receiving the NCAC Student Travel Grant Award; a full session on recent work covering how noise impacts human performance and perception; and an excellent French meal with some NAG alums at Bonaparte restaurant.

Two receive 2013-14 UNL Milton Mohr Scholarships

Congratulations to Zhao ‘Ellen’ Peng and Adam Steinbach, who were among the recipients selected to receive 2013-14 UNL Milton E. Mohr Scholarships in the College of Engineering!  Ellen is currently a PhD student in our program, while Adam is entering the 4th year of the accredited BS/MAE degree program.
