NAG Meeting 09-11-12

At this NAG meeting, MS student Jenn Francis was the featured speaker.  She gave the presentation she made at the Internoise 2012 conference in NYC for the ‘Old vs New’ session, reviewing Fletcher and Munson’s classic paper “Loudness: Its Definition, Measurement, and Calculation”.  Also discussed was Prof. Dah-You Mah and his contributions to the field of room acoustics; Prof. Mah just recently passed away in July 2012.   A large group of us are planning to attend the upcoming Kansas City Acoustical Society of America meeting in October.  We look forward to seeing many of our NAG friends there!

NAG Meeting 8-28-12

We had a great turnout for our first Nebraska Acoustics Group (NAG) meeting of the academic year on August 28, 2012, and are particularly pleased to welcome our newest NAG members: Joonhee Lee (PhD student) and Devin Wong (MS student).  We all shared news about summer activities, particularly the Hong Kong ASA and NYC Internoise conferences.  The acoustic nugget was shared by Dr. Eddie Lau … this year’s Google Science Fair winner in the age 13-14 group did a project on acoustics:  “Good Vibrations: Improving the Music Experience for People with Hearing Loss Using Multi-Frequency Tactile Sound.”  We’re looking forward to having a fun and successful academic year!

Presentation by Dr. Tracy Choi, Hong Kong Polytechnic University

I’m a bit late in posting this… but we were pleased to have Dr. Tracy Yat-Sze Choy, an Assistant Professor from the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, present to members of the Nebraska Acoustics Group on August 13, 2012, on the latest research her group has been doing on silencer design. They’re investigating passive drum-like designs that lower the incident sound level across a broad frequency range using reactive mechanisms.  Her presentation was well-received!

NAG at Internoise 2012

We’ve just returned from Internoise 2012 in NYC… it was a wonderful conference!  Three of our students (Jenn Francis, Andrew Hathaway, and Ellen Peng) did excellent jobs presenting in the first ever ‘Old Vs. New’ session.  Ellen, Carl Hart, and Dr. Eddie Lau also presented well-received talks on their research.  One particular highlight was the NAG Karaoke night (round 3!), where NAG members + alums + friends gathered to sing the night away, asian-style!  (We hope to upload a link to a video soon here…)

At the Penn State alumni reception, the news was announced that the Penn State Graduate Program in Acoustics just recently hired our alum, Dr. Michelle Vigeant as a full-time tenure-track assistant professor.  Congratulations to Michelle!  We are so proud of her!

Looking forward to the next NAG conference social event at Kansas City ASA in October 2012 … although probably it won’t involve Karaoke 😉

ASHRAE in San Antonio

Eddie Lau and Lily Wang attended the ASHRAE conference in San Antonio, June 23-27, 2012.  They enjoyed a dinner hosted by Kinetics Noise Control, on a boat cruising down the river by the San Antonio riverwalk.  Lily was also awarded an ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award and the 2012 ASHRAE Ralph Nevins Award at this conference.  Beginning in July 2012, she will also be an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer.  Congratulations, Lily!

NAG at Acoustics 2012 in Hong Kong

A group of NAG members attended the joint conference of the Acoustical Society of America with the Western Pacific Acoustics Conference and the Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics, at Acoustics 2012 in Hong Kong, May 20-25, 2012.  Highlights of this historic conference included a tour of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the multiple-course traditional Chinese banquet, networking with acousticians from Asia, and a NAG-sponsored Karaoke night (asian-style!).
