‘The End of the Ear-Splitting Dining Room’

Dr. Lily Wang was quoted in this article ‘The End of the Ear-Splitting Dining Room‘ on Eater.com! Lily’s research group has been getting more involved with restaurant acoustics, presenting two papers at the May 2019 ASA meeting in Louisville. Previously she and graduate student Kieren Smith had worked with the developer of the free Soundprint smartphone app on analyzing data sets that had been crowd-sourced from restaurants in Manhattan; download the free POMA article to read more!

JSLHR article

The April 2019 issue of the  Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research includes a paper by Dr. Zhao Ellen Peng and Dr. Lily Wang on “Listening Effort by Native and Nonnative Listeners Due to Noise, Reverberation, and Talker Foreign Accent During English Speech Perception”! The article presents more results from Ellen’s PhD work at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Results show that adverse acoustics required more effortful listening as measured subjectively with a self-report NASA Task Load Index questionnaire. This subjective scale was more sensitive than a dual task that involved speech comprehension at capturing the negative impacts of listening effort from acoustic factors (for example, background noise level and reverberation time), talker accent, and listener language abilities.

NAG Meetings in Spring 2019

The Nebraska Acoustics Group (NAG) continued to meet throughout spring 2019. At the Jan. 28 NAG meeting, Jenny Solheim presented on acoustic studies she had been pursuing using COMSOL. The acoustic nugget that was discussed focused on a UNL faculty member who has been writing a biography on Helmholtz!   The next monthly meeting on Feb. 25 featured visiting guest Erik Miller-Klein from A3 Acoustics who presented on “Acoustics in ASHRAE 189.1 ‘Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings’ and 2018 International Green Construction Code (IgCC)”.  In line with considering standards, the acoustic nugget at that meeting focused on “The Joy of Standards”; we also shared the recent ASA video produced on ASA Standards. Finally at the March 25 meeting,  Sam Underwood and Kieren Smith presented on work they had been doing for Opera Omaha.  Two acoustic nuggets were shared: interesting new developments on acoustic metamaterials, and one on Amazon Alexa using semi-supervised learning.

NAG Winter Party 2018

The annual Nebraska Acoustics Group Winter Party was held on December 12, 2018.  The party featured catered fare from Qdoba and Jones Brothers cake pops (yum!) , one hand of poker (to determine the order of opening gifts), and our traditional ‘white elephant’ gift exchange.  We had holiday photo props for our annual group photo!  2018 has been a great year; here’s to continued success in 2019!

NAG Meetings in Fall 2018

The Nebraska Acoustics Group (NAG) met regularly throughout fall 2018.  At the Aug. 31 NAG meeting, members shared information on their summer experiences. We also checked out a recent acoustic nugget on how “Pulses of light restored hearing in gerbils. Could that lead to higher-tech cochlear implants?” The next monthly meeting on Sept. 28 featured newly arrived graduate student, Will Spallino, presenting on his undergraduate senior project at Case Western.  The acoustic nugget at that meeting focused on “Using Acoustic Gunshot Localization to Curb Poaching”.  Finally at the Oct. 26 meeting,  Kieren Smith presented an update on the EPA Healthy Schools project.  The acoustic nugget involved news about a new concert hall: “Zaha Hadid Architects Reinterprets Sound Waves for the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Concert Hall”!
