NAG Meetings 10-7-15 and 10-21-15

At the 10-7-15 NAG meeting, Laura Brill and Brenna Boyd presented on the ongoing work related to the EPA Healthy Schools Project.  Two ‘acoustic nuggets’ were shared, including a favorite Boomwhackers Prelude performance and information on a new VenueDB app. Two more ‘acoustic nuggets’ were reviewed at the 10-21-15 NAG meeting: a Guinness record for the quietest anechoic chamber at Microsoft lab, and this cool video demonstrating different room acoustic effects on the same song.  Jon Weber previewed his presentation on his MS research from Georgia Tech on “Measuring Quiet Time in Neonatal Intensive Care Units”, which he will be presenting  at the upcoming Acoustical Society of America meeting in Jacksonville, FL.  Five other NAG students will be making presentations at this ASA meeting; we look forward to seeing many of our acoustic friends there!

NAG Meetings 9-9-15 and 9-23-15

The Nebraska Acoustics Group has had a great start to the 2015-16 academic year!  At our first meeting on 9-9-15, we welcomed many new members and heard from students on their summer internship experiences.  One news item that drew our attention was on quieting noise related to new drones under development.  Our next meeting on 9-23-15 featured a news item about the Buffalo Bills attempting to set a record for the world’s loudest stadium, unsuccessfully.  Hyun Hong also presented on various sound transmission prediction software that Dr. Ryherd has newly acquired.

Dr. Jonathan Rathsam with Dr. Lily Wang during recent visit

We welcomed Dr. Jonathan Rathsam (PhD ’08) back to Nebraska on June 26, 2015.  He presented on the work he’s conducting at NASA regarding perception of low-level sonic booms from new styles of supersonic aircraft that are under development.  Jonathan was off next to an international conference on sonic booms in Lyon, France, at which he would run into another NAG alum, Dr. Michelle Vigeant (PhD ’08) … what a small world acoustics can be!

NAG at ASA Conference in Pittsburgh (May 2015)

Wang-ASA-2015MentoringAward

Dr. Lily Wang flanked by current and past NAG members upon receiving the 2015 ASA Student Council Mentoring Award ‘Apple’

A number of NAG members participated in the last ASA conference in Pittsburgh (May 18-22, 2015).  Matt Blevins, Madeline Davidson, and Joonhee Lee all presented technical papers that were well-received.  We are also very proud of Jay Bliefnick who received a commendation award for his ASA Student Design Competition entry (the only winning entry designed by a team of only one student)!  There were a large number of NAG alums at the conference, many of whom stopped by NAG Game Night after the TCAA meeting on Tuesday – we particularly enjoyed ‘One Night Ultimate Werewolf’ (thanks James Cottrell!) and ‘Ticket to Ride’!  Many alums were also on hand to see Dr. Lily Wang receive an engraved crystal apple as a memento of the 2015 ASA Student Council Mentoring Award.  Check out additional photos on our Picasa webpage.
