NAG at Acoustics ’17

What a great conference: the Acoustics ’17 meeting in Boston, a joint meeting of the ASA and EAA (June 25-29, 2017)!  NAG members (Brenna Boyd, Laura Brill, Anna Catton, and Joonhee Lee) presented technical papers  in a number of sessions, some of which were live streamed.  Laura Brill’s paper “Compiled Acoustic and Indoor Environmental Condition Data from 220 K-12 Classrooms” received the Best Student Paper Award in Architectural Acoustics at Acoustics ’17 – congratulations, Laura!

To celebrate Dr. Wang’s recent election to ASA President-Elect, we had not one but two social events: Karaoke Night on Sunday 6/25/17 and NAG Board Game Night on Wednesday 6/28/27, featuring New England lobster rolls and crab cakes.  Groups played games including ‘Spyfall’, ‘Codenames Pictures’ and ‘Two Rooms and a Boom’!  Find more of our photos from the conference at our Google photos webpage.

Wang elected ASA President-Elect 2017-18

Congratulations to Dr. Lily Wang, who was recently elected to the position of President-Elect of the Acoustical Society of America for the 2017-18 term, and will serve as President in 2018-19 and Past-President in 2019-20!  Here are some excerpts from her running statement… “[I plan] to work hard, moving the society forward in line with the recent ‘Strategic Leadership for the Future’ plan.  Specifically I am interested in developing new ways for our society to serve members from different sectors better (particularly those in industry and internationally) and in expanding promotion of ASA’s activities to those outside of our society.”

How tonality and loudness of noise related to annoyance and task performance

The April 2017 issue of Noise Control Engineering Journal includes a paper by alums Dr. Joonhee Lee and Jennifer Francis with Dr. Lily Wang on “How Tonality and Loudness of Noise Relate to Annoyance and Task Performance”! The article presents results from Joonhee’s PhD work at the University of Nebraska, in which a multiple regression model was developed for predicting annoyance responses from tonal noise conditions using two of the most strongly correlated noise metrics, ANSI loudness level and tonal audibility. We have plans to publish more from Joonhee’s work soon – be on the lookout!

NAG Meetings 3-13-17 and 4-17-17

At the 3/13/17 NAG meeting, Stephanie Ahrens reviewed the work she’s completed on worship space acoustics based upon the recent ASA publication, co-edited by Dr. Erica Ryherd and two other NAG alums.  Stephanie’s work has been funded by a UNL Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience grant.  The acoustic nugget discussed how global warming is changing how the ocean carries sound.  At our 4-17-17 NAG meeting, Anna Catton presented the entry that she and Brenna Boyd are working on for this year’s ASA Student Design Competition, to be judged at the upcoming Acoustics ’17 conference.  There were two recent in-the-news ‘acoustic nuggets’ presented, one on how it’s possible to hack a phone with sound waves, and the other on how even less expensive cars are now trying to work on reducing in-car noise.  (Dr. Wang has admitted bring sound level meters with her when shopping for vehicles!)

NAG Meetings 1-23-17 and 2-13-17

At our first NAG meeting of the spring semester, Dr. Wang reviewed various professional development opportunities in acoustics, such as becoming INCE Board Certified or getting a Professional Engineering license in acoustics.  The acoustic nugget was on the new Elbphilharmonic concert hall, which used parametric design principles – it is visually stunning!  At our 2-13-17 NAG meeting, Anna Catton reviewed recent acoustics investigations using 3D audio test facilities, which she studied for her fall 2017 independent study project.  The acoustic nugget featured news on there being a biological reason for misophonia (a disorder in which people hate sounds such as other people eating/chewing)!
