Dr. Wang presents lectures at Michigan Tech (March 1-2, 2018)

Dr. Andrew Barnard from Michigan Tech invited Dr. Lily Wang to visit and present a couple of lectures, one on ‘Practical Applications and Hot Topics in Room Acoustics’ and the other on ‘Theatre Design Considerations’, on March 1-2, 2018.  Anna Catton, current NAG student and an alum of Michigan Tech, also came and joined in the subsequent brainstorming sessions on renovating Michigan Tech’s Rosza Theater.  It was great to visit with Dr. Barnard and his students; we’re looking forward to seeing how the students’ ideas on the renovation are implemented!

NAG Meetings in Spring 2018

Catton, Wang, and Smith at the Opera Omaha performance of ‘Proving Up’ (4/21/18)

The Nebraska Acoustics Group (NAG) met regularly throughout spring 2018.  At the Jan. 29th NAG meeting, Kieren Smith presented on the acoustic modeling she completed on the spring 2018 Opera Omaha performance of ‘Proving Up’ at Kaneko.  We also checked out a recent acoustic nugget on how a ‘Tractor beam breakthrough could lead to levitating humans’! (Here is a photo of us at an April performance of ‘Proving Up’!)

The next monthly meeting on Feb. 26 featured Yoshimi Hasegawa as she presented on data clustering analyses related to hospital acoustics measurements.  The acoustic nugget at that meeting focused on the renowned acoustician, James West being inducted into 2018 U.S. News STEM Leadership Hall of Fame.  Finally at the Mar. 26 meeting,  Stephanie Ahrens presented on the results of her analyses of some local healthcare facilities.  The acoustic nugget reviewed recent news on ‘Finally, a Likely Explanation for the “Sonic Weapon” Used at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba’!

NAG Winter Party 2017

The annual Nebraska Acoustics Group Winter Party was held on Wednesday, December 13, 2017.  The party featured catered fare from Carrabba’s Italian Grill , a game of ‘Tenzi’ where folks each roll ten dice and have to get the same digit on all dice (to determine the order of opening gifts), and our traditional ‘white elephant’ gift exchange.  We gave out various elf hats, as shown in our annual group photo.  We wish all of our friends and colleagues from around the world a happy holiday season and all the best in 2018!

NAG at ASA New Orleans

Sam Underwood with Dr. Lily Wang during his poster presentation

A number of NAG members participated in the ASA Meeting in New Orleans (4-8 December 2017).  Jay Bliefnick, Ian Hough,  Jared Paine (summer intern), Sam Underwood, Lily Wang and Jon Weber all presented technical papers and posters in a number of sessions, some of which were live streamed.  Jay and Ian both received Student Travel Awards from the National Council of Acoustical Consultants, to attend and present their work.  Jay’s paper ‘Evaluating Hospital Soundscapes to Improve Patient Experience’ received a Young Presenter in Noise Award from the Technical Committee in Noise – congratulations, Jay!

A scene from NAG Game Night in New Orleans

There were a large number of NAG alums at the conference, many of whom stopped by NAG Board Game Night after the TCAA meeting on Tuesday – we particularly enjoyed the games ‘Wits and Wagers Party Edition’ and ‘Secret Hitler’.  Other highlights of the meeting included: a capella singing on Monday evening, NAG member Anna Catton as the live stream guru for the meeting, getting folks to measure restaurant noise with the SoundPrint app, a Hunt Fellows 40th Anniversary celebration, and the kickoff of the Campaign for ASA Early Career Leadership.  Lastly, we offer congratulations to NAG alums Dr. David T. Bradley, Dr. Lauren Ronsse, and Dr. Erica Ryherd who received a 2017 ASA Science Writing Award for the book they edited: ‘Worship Space Acoustics: 3 Decades of Design’!  All in all, it was a great meeting, both professionally and personally.

NAG meetings in Fall 2017

The 2017-18 academic year is halfway over now, but the Nebraska Acoustics Group (NAG) has been meeting regularly throughout last fall.  Highlights from the fall’s meetings are provided here.  At the Sept. 8 NAG meeting, Anna Catton gave an update on her MS research, investigating how subjective localization is impacted when using virtual sources compared to physical sources.  We also checked out a recent acoustic nugget on ‘How Scientists Turned a Flag into a Loudspeaker’!  The next monthly meeting on Oct. 13 featured Jon Weber as he presented on his most recent hospital acoustics measurements and analyses.  The acoustic nugget at that meeting discussed the recent insight: “Light Has Been Stored as Sound for the First Time”.  Finally at the Nov. 10 meeting,  Sam Underwood presented on his analyses of data to calculate the bias, reproducibility, and repeatability of sound power measurement methods.  An oldy-but-goodie acoustic nugget on ‘The Science of Scary Screams‘ brought out laughs among the group!

Sound and Spectra Series at the KANEKO

On August 31, 2017, the Sound and Spectra Series at the KANEKO in Omaha kicked off its first full season by exploring the music of living spectral composers. Dr. Lily Wang collaborated with composer Dr. Stacey Barelos on a new work that was premiered on the Generator Series. Using their collective expertise, Wang and Barelos created a new musical piece for chamber ensemble that responded directly to the acoustic environment of KANEKO.  Audience members were able to watch the live spectrum and spectrogram while the piece was played!
